Artist's Statement - Monotypes
My most recent monotypes, as of 2009, were made in New York City in collaboration with master printer Lisa Mackie, using the more common process of painting or applying ink or paint onto a plate, usually plexiglas.
These monotypes represent some of my work from the past several years, and speak to transformation, the transitory nature of material things, and the value of each moment we fully experience. Color is the lifeblood of my work, followed by light and shadow … all elements that are impermanent and subject to context, time, weather, and memory.
The earliest monotypes using oil and wax were made in collaboration with Master Printer Sheila Marbain at her studio in New York. Her unusual "silk monotype" process uses elements of silkscreen printing combined with drawing and/or painting. These are often inspired by the natural world, ranging from the color and light of the Southwest and the Mediterranean to the Botanical Gardens of Brooklyn, and sometimes by the city itself, which is equally subject to change.
